Qualification Test: Steel Welding Qualification Test Information and Pre-Registration

Steel Welding Qualification Test Information and Pre-Registration

Earn a designation by successfully completing the I-CAR hands-on Steel Welding Qualification Test. This test measures a student's ability to make welds required to repair today's vehicles. Working with automotive grade, 18 gauge, 60/60 electro-galvanized steel, participants will perform four different welds in both vertical and overhead positions. The four welds are a fillet weld on a lap joint, a plug weld on a lap joint, a butt joint with backing, and open butt joint weld.

Preparing for the Test

Participants receive test preparation materials on a CD-ROM when they pre-register for the test. This provides details about the test and how the welds are checked. Also included are instructions for practice and pre-testing of welds. All students are encouraged to practice their welds before taking the test.

The Day of the Test

Registration and testing take about three hours. Each test has a time restriction. Participants have 40 minutes to familiarize themselves with the equipment and surroundings by practicing the three vertical position welds. The student must then complete the test welds in 20 minutes. Overhead position welds are timed in a similar manner.

Measuring Performance

Welds are visually inspected according to strict guidelines. If the welds pass the visual inspection, they are destructively tested. Students taking the test receive a complete report four to six weeks after the test. All six welds must pass to qualify. Welds that do not pass must be retaken within six months of the original test date.

Participants will earn four points for passing this test.

Certificate of Qualification

I-CAR issues a certificate of qualification to those who pass the Steel Welding Qualification Test. It is necessary to re-qualify every five years by retaking the test and meeting the same criteria as first time students.
