Figure 1–By the end of 2003, all Ford Motor Company vehicles will have a body collision repair manual available.

July 1, 2002 -Ford Motor Company is back in the business of producing body collision repair manuals. Four manuals are already available to dealers online: 2002 Explorer/Mountaineer, Taurus/Sable, Focus, and Lincoln Blackwood. Independent repair facilities will be able to purchase the manuals, in either paper or CD-ROM format, by the fourth quarter of the year. By then there should be more available, as about a dozen manuals are scheduled to be released this year. Another seven manuals will be released next year to cover the rest of the Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury product line (see Figure 1).

Figure 2–Early body repair information from Ford Motor Company included collision repair manuals and a newsletter.

Ford Motor Company used to regularly release body repair information, including collision repair manuals for most models and a body repair newsletter called "Body Repair Tips" (see Figure 2). There was a manual produced in Europe for the 1994 Contour/Mystique, but the last domestic body repair manuals were released for the 1992 model year.

Each manual contains complete vehicle-specific body replacement and repair procedure information, including exploded views of both sheet metal and plastic parts and their part numbers (see Figure 3). Sectioning information is included only if there was a previous technical service bulletin released detailing the procedure. The manuals also contain complete dimensional specifications for the body, chassis, and pickup box.

In addition to the vehicle-specific information, the manuals provide generic collision repair information on Ford Motor Company-approved metal, plastic, and refinishing procedures. Generic welding techniques and paint problem identification is also included in each manual, as well as dealer special order paint and primer codes and background information to assist with warranty issues.
