Current Events/News: I-CAR Press Releases: 2000 Press Releases
August 21, 2000 THE I-CAR 2000 INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL MEETING - AN EXCEPTIONAL EVENT! (Toronto, Ontario) I-CARs International Annual Meeting, held July 27 - 30, 2000 at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto, Ontario, was one of the most comprehensive events I-CAR has ever conducted. This year the Welcome Reception was aboard a yacht cruising Lake Ontario. Guests enjoyed dining, dancing, and a spectacular view of the Toronto skyline. This was a great start to a weekend of important Industry discussions and presentations. At the General Session, Tom Mack, I-CAR Executive Vice President and CEO, reported on the many accomplishments of I-CAR during the past year. Tom also analyzed the Industrys difficult market realities and how I-CAR has successfully met the challenge of providing technical training in over 400 local markets. Tom stated that I-CAR, with its Volunteers and Instructors, has filled a training void in the Industry for over 21 years---doing a job that no other organization could or would try to do over these many years. Tom also gave an update on I-CARs new Enhanced Delivery programs and how they fit into I-CARs Outward Vision to better serve the Industry. As I-CAR Chairman Rick Tuuri stated, "Together we will make I-CARs Outward Vision a reality." The General Session included Keynote Speaker Brian ONeill. Mr. ONeill gave an engaging presentation on how the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) use the media to prompt vehicle manufacturers to take action. The organizations are dedicated to researching vehicle safety, then sharing their findings with the marketplace through televised news programs and newspapers. This creates a consumer demand for action, which is much quicker than waiting for government regulations. The end result is safer vehicles for the consumer, reducing deaths and injuries. The second day of the General Session included speaker Richard Altieri, an Industry Consultant at PPG Industries. Mr. Altieri spoke about all areas of the Collision Repair Industry, adopting an inter-dependent philosophy. The idea is that in order to reduce friction and improve efficiencies, businesses must change their approach when dealing with other businesses within the Industry. Mr. Altieri stated that by adopting this approach, "The Industry will be working inter-dependently towards excellence." At this years meeting, I-CAR conducted three of the newest Enhanced Delivery programs: Damage Analysis Programs 2 & 3 taught by Paulo Santos and Roy Watkins, and Air Conditioning Program 1 taught by Ken Kempfer and John Poot. Many took advantage of the opportunity to participate in one or even two of the classes. Technical Clinics were again a part of the Annual Meeting. Over 30 clinics were conducted on a variety of topics including e-commerce, information systems, contamination, vehicle body design, and glass repair. For the benefit of all attendees, most clinics were offered more than once. The clinics gave leading organizations in the Collision Industry a way to provide a large number of individuals with their latest product, service or technical knowledge. Attendees found the clinics to be interesting and informative, as well as an opportunity to network with other professionals in the Industry. The technical clinics continue to be very well received, and will be a part of future I-CAR International Annual Meetings. A special thank you to the sponsors of the I-CAR 2000 International Annual Meeting: Join us next year for the I-CAR 2001 International Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. Watch for the announcement coming soon! I-CAR, founded in 1979, is an international, not-for-profit, training organization dedicated to improving the quality, safety and efficiency of auto collision repair for the ultimate benefit of the consumer.
