August 29, 1997 I-CAR ANNOUNCES 1998 GOLD CLASS PROFESSIONALS PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS (Rolling Meadows, IL) I-CAR recently announced the 1998 qualifications for the Gold Class Professionals" program. Starting January 1, 1998, businesses must complete 80% of their total course unit requirement, and each employee must complete 40% of their course unit requirement for their individual position or job description in order for the business to qualify for Gold Class. In the US, businesses will also be required to submit a payroll record indicating employees' names and social security numbers. This is to help ensure the information given on applications is complete and accurate. In the US, the Parts Manager position will not be required to obtain Gold Class points for a business to become Gold Class. This was decided after an evaluation that the Parts Manager position in the United States is not directly involved in the collision repair process, and therefore, should not be required to obtain I-CAR Training. Also in the US, each position within a glass business required to obtain training will only need two points rather than three (three is the current US requirement). This decision was made because there are only two units in the Glass Replacement course. In Canada, however, the Workplace Hazardous Materials course is also considered to apply to glass businesses. Therefore, Canada will require each position needing training within a glass business to obtain three Gold Class points. The US will also move to an Anniversary Renewal policy (Canada is already on Anniversary Renewal). This means businesses that qualify for the Gold Class Professionals program will not be required to renew for one calendar year. For example, if a business qualifies for the Gold Class program in July, they would not be required to renew until the next July. Currently, all Gold Class businesses are required to renew in January regardless of when they initially qualified for the program. This volume has caused delays in processing applications. This new procedure will eliminate that problem. The Gold Class International Directory will be printed twice a year. If you have any questions about the new Gold Class program requirements or have input or suggestions for the program, please contact: Jennifer Schaefer, I-CAR Gold Class Coordinator, at 800.422.7872 (800.422.7872). In Canada, please call 1-800-565-ICAR (1-800-565-4227). I-CAR, founded in 1979, is an international, not-for-profit, training organization dedicated to improving the quality, safety, and efficiency of auto collision repair for the ultimate benefit of consumers.
