I-CAR GOLD CLASS PROFESSIONALS HIGHLIGHTED ON MOTORWEEK'S GOSS' GARAGE
Pat Goss noted, "I receive many phone calls, e-mails, and have conversations with vehicle owners related to the repairability of collision-damaged vehicles and the quality of body repairs following a collision. Many of the questions and problems can be traced directly to either the need for training or a lack of training. The fact is, to properly restore both the appearance and safety features of a modern vehicle; repair technicians must have special technical training. Because safety after the repair depends on training, I would select a repair facility that has earned the I-CAR Gold Class Professionals designation. Tom McGee said, "We were very honored to be asked to participate in this segment of Goss' Garage to help vehicle owners understand the need to have their repairs done by trained technicians employed at a Gold Class Professionals designated business. Pat Goss, through this television show and other media that he is involved in, promotes the positive aspects of our industry to the consumer while at the same time helping to educate them on how to get their vehicle properly repaired." Be sure to tune in on Saturday, October 14, 2006 to view this episode! I-CAR PREMIERS NEW TRAINING PROGRAM AT NACE 2006: FIRST 100 ATTENDEES TO RECEIVE FREE OEM REPAIR MANUALS
"We appreciate the Chrysler Group's support in the development of this program. Without the vehicles and parts that they donated, and technical support they have provided, this program would not have been possible," said Jason Bartanen, I-CAR Technical Development Manager. "We're excited to be able to offer this program to the industry and to unveil it at NACE is unique; it's not something we've had the opportunity to do often." The Collision Repair Overview for Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep Vehicles (DCX01) training program includes an overview of construction designs and materials used in Chrysler Group vehicles and unique repair recommendations specific to those vehicles. I-CAR will provide copies of the Dodge Caliber and LX (Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, and Magnum) Body Repair CD-ROMs to the first 100 students that attend DCX01 at NACE. The CD-ROMs include information on construction material identification and repair procedures, including partial replacement recommendations unique to these vehicles. In addition, the Chrysler Group, through Dealer Technical Operations, is donating 75 copies each of four body repair CD-ROMs, and 75 copies of each of their special publications to I-CAR. The publications include; Welding and Weld Bonding, Non-Structural Sheet Metal Repair Manual, Paint Condition deck, Refinish Paint Suppliers and Paint Materials/Systems deck, Plastic Repair Guide deck, and Sealer/Sound Deadener Repair Guide deck. These materials will be distributed to I-CAR program instructors and zone trainers who qualify to teach the new Chrysler Group training program. "We recognize that I-CAR training adds to the professionalism of the collision industry and are happy to be able to provide I-CAR instructors with the published information that will help them deliver the proper repair recommendations for Chrysler Group vehicles," said Daryl Porter, DaimlerChrysler, Global Service Program Manager. "We have enjoyed working with I-CAR on development of this training program and look forward to continuing this professional relationship for many years to come." |

I-CAR EDUCATION FOUNDATION 2006 SCHOOL SURVEY REVEALS NEED FOR FUNDING AND SUPPORTThe I-CAR Education Foundation 2006 school survey revealed that lack of funds is the biggest issue confronting career and technical schools and colleges today. A full 40.9% of schools surveyed are seriously affected by this problem. In addition, lack of support from school administration and local employers are other key areas threatening schools today. Greg Brink, a collision repair instructor at Kishwaukee College in Malta, Illinois, agrees, "It is very important that the collision industry supports collision repair programs. Many schools are closing programs or not funding them properly. We need help from the industry so we can train the future technicians with the skills needed today." Clark Plucinski, of True2Form Collision Centers and Chairman of the Education Foundation Board of Trustees, echoes Brink's comments, "Our industry needs to respond to the call of the schools and colleges that provide the vital pre-employment education for our entry-level technicians and employees. Whether you are a repairer, insurer, auto manufacturer or supplier to this industry, the schools and young people they teach need your help." The I-CAR Education Foundation has released results from its second annual school survey and the findings are compelling. The survey provides collision industry professionals with a roadmap to guide their efforts aimed at attracting and preparing the tomorrow's industry experts. In addition to the lack of funding and support, 37.7% of the schools who responded to the survey indicated that they only update curriculum for their collision repair program every four years or more, despite the constantly changing technological demands of the industry. This is a major concern as students from those programs are not receiving the most up-to-date training and, therefore, do not have some of the necessary skills needed in their future career. Ron Ray, the Executive Director for the Foundation, believes that the industry needs to pay more attention to the problems that the survey brings to light. "The results of this survey should serve as a call to action to professionals concerned about the future of the collision industry," says Ray. "The future of our industry depends on the industry working together to solve these problems. It's time for everyone to get serious and pitch in to help the Foundation and others that are developing the solutions to the industry's needs." A summary of the 2006 school survey results can be downloaded for free from the Foundation web site by clicking on "Forms and Downloads." A sample of 1,348 career and technical schools and colleges were contacted for the 2006 survey. Replies were solicited by direct mail, e-mail, and telephone. A total of 341, or about 25.3%, of career and technical schools and colleges who received the survey, responded with completed forms. Survey questions focused on school statistics, enrollment, computer capabilities, and future products and services desired. The I-CAR Education Foundation would like to thank all career and technical schools and colleges who participated in the survey. "The I-CAR Education Foundation exists to address many industry needs, including those listed as heightened concerns in the survey results," Plucinski continued. "Tax-deductible donations to the Foundation can be applied to curriculum; Career Day marketing materials; collisionskids.org and collisioncareers.org recruitment web sites; and programs such as the Collision Repair Instructors Network (CRIN), PACE+ST3, and the Industry Training Alliance."
