I-CAR RESTRUCTURES INDUSTRY TRAINING ALLIANCE FEE TO BENEFIT CUSTOMERS

I-CAR has restructured its Industry Training Alliance fee for the benefit of students that apply for Gold Class points for training completed through Alliance partners. The fee restructuring will also benefit the entire collision industry by making the Gold Class Professionals qualification more affordable. I-CAR is committed to increasing and optimizing collision repair training within the entire industry through the Industry Training Alliance.

When applying to I-CAR for recognition of Alliance provider training, the new fee structure in the United States is $20 per Gold Class point, with a maximum total fee of $100 per application. In Canada, the new fee structure is CDN $30 per Gold Class point, with a maximum total fee of CDN $150 per application.

Formerly, there was no maximum fee cap per application. A student can also save money by applying for I-CAR recognition of multiple Alliance training programs on a single Alliance student application; the same processing fee structure applies. Each student must submit a separate application. Please note that for I-CAR recognition of courses from career and technical schools and colleges participating in the Alliance, a different fee structure applies. Please refer to the career and technical school student application for more information.

The new Industry Training Alliance fee helps encourage comprehensive, quality collision repair training through the resources of Industry Training Alliance members. The Training Alliance eliminates training redundancy and reduces the time and expense of technical training. It also enables training organizations and career and technical schools and colleges to work together to provide the collision industry with a coordinated and comprehensive training curriculum. By further encouraging training through the Training Alliance, I-CAR's vision statement of "Every person in the collision industry has the necessary technical knowledge and skills relevant to their position to ensure a complete and safe repair" becomes closer to realization.

GENERAL MOTORS SERVICE TECHNICAL COLLEGE JOINS THE I-CAR INDUSTRY TRAINING ALLIANCE

I-CAR announces that General Motors Service Technical College is now a member of the Industry Training Alliance program in the United States. Formed by I-CAR in 2000, the Alliance brings together technical training providers to optimize the training efforts of the collision industry.

General Motors Training Integration Manager, Jean Hart stated, "General Motors recognizes the industry-wide issue of training redundancy and desires to reduce the time and expense of technical training for its dealers and dealers' sublet body shops. We are pleased to have our courses recognized for the Industry Training Alliance and review courses from other training providers." Hart further commented, "Having Gold Class points awarded for our training classes means that shops can achieve DRP status without having to invest as much time and expense in training. This is good for the (collision repair) shops, and good for General Motors."

The approved training programs from General Motors Service Technical College are:

  • Structural Damage Analysis and Correction (6 Gold Class points)
  • Introduction to Air Conditioning (3 Gold Class points)
  • Unibody Structural Repair (5 Gold Class points)
  • Body on Frame Structural Repair (5 Gold Class points)
  • MIG/GMAW Welding (2 Gold Class points)
  • Electrical/Electronic Stage 1 (1 Gold Class point)
  • Electrical/Electronic Stage 2 (1 Gold Class point)
  • Electrical/Electronic Stage 3 (1 Gold Class point)

The Gold Class points that students can receive for these programs apply toward both the I-CAR Gold Class Professionals and Platinum Individual programs.

"I am very pleased to welcome the General Motors Service Technical College to the Industry Training Alliance," stated Tom McGee, I-CAR's Executive Vice President and CEO. McGee further commented, "Students' options for meeting their training needs are greatly increased as quality technical training programs continue to be added to the Alliance. This in turn benefits the consumer by having their vehicle repaired by trained professionals."

9TH ANNUAL I-CAR EDUCATION FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA A SUCCESS
By Southeast Field Manager Jerry Sopkowiak

John Mattos (center) of Mattos Paint Supply, who helped organize the golf event, enjoys some 'tee-time' discussion.

The I-CAR Northern Virginia District Committee held its 9th annual Education Foundation Golf Tournament on September 16, 2002 at the Chantilly National Golf Club in Chantilly, Virginia. This has been the site of the annual event for the last nine years. To date, the Northern Virginia committee has raised more than $55,000 for the I-CAR Education Foundation from the golf outings.

Over 144 players participated, which is the maximum amount that can play at this course. Golfers came from every segment of the collision industry. There were more than 65 sponsors this year that provided funds for door prizes: the hole-in-one prize (which was a Cadillac SUV), closest to the pin competition, as well as individual hole sponsors. A banquet was held at the end of the day with 150 people attending. This year's event proved to be the best ever!

Congratulations to the Northern Virginia committee for their efforts to support the I-CAR Education Foundation. For more information about this event, please contact Southeast Field Manager Jerry Sopkowiak.

2002 I-CAR INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL MEETING - AWARD PROFILE: NORTHWEST REGION

I-CAR Northwest Region Instructor of the Year Award - Mark Olson

Mark Olson was selected as the Instructor of the Year for the I-CAR Northwest Region.

Mark attended the original collision repair course in 1985. In 1993 Mark became an instructor and has been teaching ever since. Some of the aspects of the new Enhanced Delivery courses that Mark particularly enjoys are that they are more up-to-date and present valuable information to the students. While teaching, Mark enjoys remarking to the class "Today is today, but tomorrow will be different after taking the class." Mark states this because he notices that during a course, the students are being made aware of information they might not have had before and they will be able to use this knowledge in the future.

I-CAR Instructor of the Year Award winners: (left to right) Kim Beck, John Poot, Bob Zelano, Todd Hoffman, Mark Olson, Tony Jones, Larry Boser and Paul Santos.

Mark believes that each of the Enhanced Delivery courses is unique in their own way, however most of the classes that he is teaching now are the CR3000 courses. Mark noted that the broad base of collision repair information that the CR3000 course provides is very beneficial to the students.

Congratulations on your award Mark!

I-CAR Northwest Region Founders Award - Larry Hults

Congratulations to Larry Hults for receiving the I-CAR Northwest Region Founders Award!

Larry initially became involved with I-CAR in 1980 by attending one of the original plastics courses in Spokane, Washington. In 1987, Larry returned to take another I-CAR class. He noticed that the instructor helped create a neutral atmosphere for both the collision repair technicians and insurance company representatives. Larry began teaching I-CAR classes the next year!

Larry believes that there has been a change in the students' attitudes that attend I-CAR classes. Larry feels there may have been instances in the past where students felt that they were being forced to attend classes so they initially were difficult to teach. However, these days Larry believes that students walk into a classroom looking to be taught something new.

2002 I-CAR Founder's Award winners: (left to right) Jose Vargas, James Suppe Jr., Marc Essig accepting on behalf of Joey Torres, Larry Hults, Bruce Daufenbach, Dan Frohlich, Jenny Wesner and Robby Robbs.

In the Washington area, Larry said that the corrosion protection and adhesive bonding courses are the most popular. Larry particularly enjoys teaching the steering and suspension course because he had a hand in writing the current course and it is the most applicable to the insurance companies and collision repair businesses.

Larry was once scheduled to teach a steering and suspension course across town and after fighting traffic, there was one student in the class that was registered for 15. The conversation and interaction between Larry and the student was so involved and detailed about the course, that the concepts of that conversation have been implemented into the course content.

Thank you for your continued support Larry!

LATEST SOUTH PACIFIC FOUNDERS AWARD WINNER RAISES MONEY WHILE IN 'JAIL'
By South Pacific Field Manager Lorene Lombardi

To help raise funds for the annual Labor Day Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon, I-CAR South Pacific Instructor Joey Torres donated her time by becoming one of the 'inmates' for the Hawaii Executive Lock Up held on August 21 and 22, 2002. The event took place at the Sunset Grill Restaurant in Honolulu, Hawaii. Each jailbird was asked to raise $1,250 for the cause, and in her normal style of exceeding expectations, Joey raised $1,410 from family and friends.

In total Hawaii raised $54,367 in pledges for the marathon this year. Besides the Hawaii Executive Lock Up, there were events such as a fireman's boot collection and a 7-Eleven golf tournament.

I-CAR and the South Pacific region are always proud of the way Joey gives her all, and to be sentenced to a jail cell goes over and above.

Another job well done, Joey!
