INSTRUCTORS SHARPEN THEIR SKILLS IN TEXAS
By Instructor Training Manager Lori King-Taylor

Instructors from the I-CAR Southwest Region came together in Arlington, Texas on September 7 and 8, 2002 for a weekend of education, networking and fun. Experienced instructors and those new to the Enhanced Delivery courses were brought together and given the opportunity to learn from each other and to share their experiences and ideas.

Instructors had the opportunity to spend time learning their way around the Internet.

Instructors were given hands-on training with the equipment and Internet resources. Other areas of discussion included: developing ideas on how to better use the objectives worksheet in the classroom and how to address language barriers and student post tests. Participants of this workshop were very complimentary of the weekend and the opportunity to learn from and network with their fellow instructors.

This fall, all instructors have the opportunity to participate in an Enhanced Delivery Teaching Techniques Workshop like the one taught in Arlington. To get the maximum benefit out of this workshop, it is essential for even the most experienced instructors to participate. With the wealth of experience and knowledge instructors have in our instructor corps, these workshops should prove to be a rewarding and valuable experience. Come prepared to learn from your fellow instructors and to share your ideas on what makes your classroom presentations successful.

Upcoming workshops include:

  • Baltimore, Maryland - September 13 and 15
  • Indianapolis, Indiana - October 19 and 20
  • Detroit, Michigan - October 19 and 20
  • Winnipeg, Manitoba - October 19 and 20
  • Seattle, Washington - October 26 and 27
  • Toronto, Ontario - TBD

2002 I-CAR INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL MEETING - AWARD PROFILE: NORTHEAST REGION

Instructor of the Year Award - John Poot

Congratulations to John Poot for winning the ‘Instructor of the Year’ award for the I-CAR Northeast Region! John Poot has been an instructor with I-CAR since the early 1980’s. At that time he was a career and technical school instructor so John believed teaching I-CAR courses would help diversify his background.

John Poot receives the Instructor of the Year Award for I-CAR’s Northeast Region.

John remembers when I-CAR’s teaching material consisted of a tray of color slides. Instructors produced their own lesson plans, demonstrations, and props; and most of the information was "show-and-tell." For the first class John taught, he brought a wrecked vehicle and went through all the steps involved in the repair program.

John said, "Not only was there a great need in the industry for this sort of training, but the delivery methods got better and better over time, hence my continued involvement with I-CAR. The new Enhanced Delivery courses not only add a great deal to the industry, but also allow for fast updating of the materials to be presented to the trade."

Congratulations on your award John!

Founder’s Award - Dan Frohlich

Dan Frohlich was presented with the Founder’s Award for the I-CAR Northeast Region. Dan started with I-CAR back in 1980 as an assistant instructor. Three years later Dan began teaching by himself and has been a very active I-CAR instructor ever since.

Dan was initially involved with a mechanical repair business in 1969 and dealt strictly with wheel alignment services. Dan and his business’ reputation led to local collision repair businesses sending their customers’ cars to his shop strictly for Dan’s wheel alignment services. Dan began noticing that more repair work was needed to the vehicles. Over time, Dan acquired more business space and equipment, which allowed him to enter into the collision repair industry.

Dan Frohlich receives the Founders Award from I-CAR Northeast Field Manager David Coffey.

By entering the industry this way, Dan was able to have a good outside view, but was not aware of some of the issues between the insurance agencies and repair businesses. Dan said that becoming an I-CAR instructor and interacting with both different industries has enhanced his business and course instruction by "better understanding concerns. This allows for better communication." Over the years of being an instructor, he also believes that there isn’t nearly as much tension between the two different sides of the industry as there used to be. It is now a common occurrence for both sides to see each other as mutual business partners, both striving toward one goal…. to repair their customers’ cars properly.

Dan enjoys being able to come into a classroom and see students realize a new aspect about the collision repair process. The enlightened look on their faces and compliments he receives following the class are rewarding for him.

Thank you Dan for the many years of hard work and support!

CANADA ‘NEW PATH TO SUCCESS’ PROGRAM
By Canada Field Manager Tracey Blouin

In March of this year a group of industry professionals were invited to attend a meeting that updated them on how I-CAR training has changed and to explain the new Enhanced Delivery programs. At the conclusion of this meeting, the group agreed that the industry was not up-to-date regarding I-CAR’s new programs, and in fact, seemed to be losing interest in training altogether.

Since that snowy day in March, a very dedicated group of volunteers devoted much of their time to ensure that trend was reversed. It has been the common belief of this dedicated group that the industry needs to be trained more today than ever before because of the quantum leaps in vehicle technology.

The key point of this event was to illustrate to the guests that training is essential. The efforts of this group brought together 386 guests.

Moderated by Chuck Sulkala of Acme Paint & Body, the event opened with the presentation of two awards. The District Committee Award was presented to the Golden Triangle Committee and the Instructor of the Year Award was presented to Paul Santos from Riteway Auto Body.

I-CAR International Board of Directors Chairman Roger Wright addressed the audience and stated that I-CAR’s international efforts and support in Canada will continue to get stronger. He made sure the audience knew that if they had a need, they could reach him anytime.

Another key element of the evening was the presentations and panel discussions from the following speakers: Wendy Hillier, from CGU Group Canada; Lorenzo D’Alessandro, from 427 Auto Collision; Eve Patterson, from the Insurance Bureau of Canada; Michelle Sales, an Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Coordinator; Brian Whitcomb, from General Motors; Scott Wheeler, from Akzo Nobel Coatings; and I-CAR Executive Vice-President & CEO, Tom McGee.

Each of these presenters spoke about the value of training as it relates to their industry segment. The evening wrapped up with the audience having the opportunity to ask the panelists questions.

I-CAR SEEKING ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTORS

I-CAR’s new Enhanced Delivery programs continue to be introduced throughout the U.S. and Canada, creating the need for additional qualified instructors to teach I-CAR courses. I-CAR is looking for professionals with expertise in mechanical and collision repair that would like to be I-CAR instructors.

Being an I-CAR instructor has many benefits, including up-to-date technical training, professional development training, visibility in the industry, monetary compensation, and access to I-CAR’s technical information and reference materials.

As an I-CAR instructor, you will be part of an elite group of people who are recognized as experts within the industry. The training you provide will help improve the quality of collision and automotive repairs, resulting in increased safety for consumers.

If you are interested in becoming an I-CAR instructor, download an application form online or for more information, contact your I-CAR Field Manager toll free at (800) 422-7456.

2002 I-CAR INTERNATIONAL ANNUAL MEETING - AWARD PROFILE: SOUTHWEST REGION

fig 1. Photo

I-CAR Southwest Field Manager Jeff Peevy presents Todd Hoffman with the Instructor of the Year Award for his region.

Instructor of the Year Award - Todd Hoffman

Congratulations to Todd Hoffman of Richmond, Texas! Hoffman became an instructor for I-CAR three years ago and says, "It is rewarding to see students in the classroom notice that times are changing within the collision repair industry. They are learning something new every time."

Hoffman has taught classes in both the Southwest and North Central I-CAR Regions. Hoffman teaches I-CAR courses six days a week and says that by teaching every I-CAR course, it allows him to stay up-to-date with all the available material. He tries to find ways of having fun with all of the classes.

Over time, Hoffman has found himself in some unique situations. Once, when teaching a course in Austin, Texas, the doors to the classroom facility were locked. Instead of canceling, Hoffman set up the class in the parking lot and students listened as they sat on the tailgates of their trucks. In Bullhead, Arizona, classes were scheduled for a Saturday and Sunday. After the Saturday class, Hoffman was instructed that he could leave his teaching materials in the classroom facility. That night, the building was struck by lightning and burned to the ground. To adapt to the unfortunate situation, Hoffman set up the classroom in his hotel room.

Congratulations on your award, Todd!

Founder’s Award - Jose Vargas

fig 1. Photo

(left to right) I-CAR Southwest Field Manager Jeff Peevy stands with past Southwest Field Manager Doug Middleton and Southwest Founders Award winner Jose Vargas.

Jose Vargas of Harligen, Texas was the I-CAR Southwest Region winner of the Founder’s Award. Vargas stated, "The I-CAR Founder's Award is truly a milestone in my career. I am fortunate to be part of an organization that is so committed to excellence in the auto collision industry. I am humbled by this recognition and support from my colleagues and hope to be of service to I-CAR for many years to come."

Jose has been teaching for I-CAR since 1990. Back then, Jose was teaching 90 percent of the traditional courses. Since the Enhanced Delivery courses have been made available, Jose has been teaching the CR3000 courses and several others.

Initially, Jose saw the need for collision repair training with the students that he instructed at the vocational technical school. Jose was in the position to begin teaching and make a difference with the students and believes that instructing was "the best thing that could have happened to himself."

Vargas was also the recipient of the Golden Apple Award this year at the 2002 I-CAR International Annual Meeting, which is given to an instructor who not only has made a huge impact in the classroom, but to all of I-CAR. He has traveled all across the United States delivering I-CAR courses in Spanish and will even be instructing two Spanish delivered Enhanced Delivery courses at NACE this year! The last time that Jose taught at NACE was four years ago. He will also be presenting two Spanish delivered, 90-minute presentations at NACE entitled "What’s New with Refinishing" and "What’s New with MIG Welding."

Congratulations and great job, Jose!
