EXTREME EVENT: OKLAHOMA CITY

Over 120 students attended the latest I-CAR Extreme event, held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on September 22, 2001. The attendees met with vendors, judged show cars and motorcycles, and took two I-CAR Enhanced Delivery classes.

At 4:00 AM, the Southwest Extreme Team, a group of dedicated I-CAR instructors from across the Southwest region, and members of the Oklahoma City I-CAR Committee, assembled outside the garage door to start preparations for the day. Students began arriving at 8:00 AM to look at the cars and talk to the vendors.

The blast of an air horn then brought all eyes to the stage, and the morning class began. Worker Protection was the first class offered – free of charge – to all attendees. The highlight of the class was when "Egner" (an I-CAR instructor disguised as a body man in desperate need of training) arrived, dressed in dirty coveralls with too much hair in his eyes. Egner ran onstage to ask silly questions of the instructor and unwittingly demonstrate how to be an unsafe, if not dangerous, technician.

Corrosion Protection Program 1, a relatively new Enhanced Delivery class, was also taught. The program covers all aspects of what causes corrosion and how the collision industry can protect repaired vehicles from it. A heckler, calling himself "Captain Corrosion," interrupted the class several times to try to dissuade students from learning how to stop him from making cars rust. In the end, he was encased in silly string to simulate the protective layers used in the repair process.

Vendors paid to display at the event and donated door prizes. Generous sponsors gave tools, jackets, stereos and a pair of Sata spray guns to eager students. The Extreme Team sold T-shirts listing 18 sponsors on the back and Oklahoma Extreme 2001 on the front, and donated the $1003.25 collected to the Red Cross.

The concept of the "Extreme Event" began in the Southwest Region on June 3, 2000 in Fort Worth, Texas. These large industry events offer free training to all attendees through paid sponsorships. They serve to energize local I-CAR committees, bring a spirit of teamwork to regional volunteers, bring awareness of I-CAR to a local area and provide quality training to the collision industry. A special thanks goes out to the sponsors and the volunteers who make this noble work possible.

AWARD WINNER PROFILES: SOUTH CENTRAL REGION

Congratulations to South Central Region’s Kevin Goyke and Konrad Hacker of Illinois!

Kevin Goyke won the Instructor of the Year Award for the South Central Region, and he has been involved with I-CAR for many years. He has been working for Allstate Insurance Company for almost 20 years, and currently holds the position of senior home office performance specialist. Specifically, Kevin works in the training department to design materials for the Allstate claims staff.

When Kevin was asked how he got started as an I-CAR instructor, he spoke fondly of two individuals who played a key role in his early days with I-CAR. Bill Hudson and Butch Grainger team-taught with Kevin, taking him under their wings and showing Kevin everything they knew. Bill and Butch had a strong impact on Kevin’s career as an I-CAR instructor, and he will always remember the support they provided him.

Kevin stated that "everyone at I-CAR has been really supportive to the volunteers and students" throughout all of his years as an instructor. "The I-CAR staff is very personable and friendly, and he has yet to hear anything negative about the staff at I-CAR." Thank you, Kevin, for the kind comments. The feelings are mutual! Because of his experiences with I-CAR, Kevin has had the opportunity to meet a lot of different people in the collision industry. People like Field Manager Mike Miller have also provided Kevin with the support he needed to excel as an instructor.

Goyke Teaching

CR2000 is one of Kevin’s favorite classes to teach. He is looking forward to teaching the new and improved CR3000 class soon. Kevin enjoys CR2000 because it is a longer class, giving him the chance to bond with his students. Fun is a key element in Kevin’s teaching style because he knows people learn best when they are having fun. One student’s response on a class evaluation form was, "Kevin used analogies that were common and easy to understand. He made class fun, but still delivered the full message and objectives." Another student commented, "Kevin is great. He is the best instructor on this industry topic that I have ever had." Kevin is currently teaching Adhesive Bonding, Plastic Repair, Glass Replacement and CR2000. Along with teaching these I-CAR classes, Kevin has also participated in many I-CAR workshops, course reviews and pilot classes.

Thanks for all of hard work, Kevin, and thanks for being a great example of a dedicated I-CAR instructor!

Konrad Hacker won this years Founder’s Award for the South Central Region because of his motivation and positive I-CAR volunteer spirit. For the past couple of years, Konrad’s district has been number one in the number of student units taught in the South Central Region. However, Konrad is not only using his talents and ideas to help his district succeed, he is constantly reaching out and extending a helping hand to other areas throughout the region.

Konrad first got involved with I-CAR in the late 1980s by working in a publicity position. The existing chairman of his district had received another job offer, giving Konrad the opportunity to take over the position. Konrad has been the District 604 chairman ever since. His devotion to his district and the region has proved to be an important factor in his success as chairman.

Since the age of 15, Konrad has been involved with the automotive industry. When asked what role I-CAR has played in his career he stated, "I-CAR has helped me meet a lot of people, and it has been a great source for technical help. If I ever have a problem, I know I can just call the Tech Centre in Appleton, Wisconsin. They are very good at helping me out with any technical problems my customers or I may have."

Because Konrad has been in the industry for such a long period of time, individuals in his district know to call him when they want a class at their facility. By the end of September, Konrad always has an entire roster through June of courses that will be available in his district. He works very hard to offer every class that I-CAR teaches at least once a year. When there is greater demand for a class, he makes sure that it is offered more often. Konrad is glad to see I-CAR moving forward with the Enhanced Delivery curriculum. He believes that "people will appreciate the state-of-the-art technology of these programs."

Congratulations on winning the Founder’s Award, Konrad!
