    Gold Class PSAs Educate Consumers

"You've been in an accident... your car needs repairs... now what?" I-CAR helps consumers answer that question with a series of public service announcements sent out this month. To promote consumer awareness of the Gold Class Professionals program, I-CAR sent a CD with six public service announcements to 1,000 radio stations in the U.S. and Canada. The PSAs use a variety of creative scenarios - including scenes of an automotive "dating game" and a collision repair "emergency room" to illustrate the importance of choosing a highly trained repair facility after an auto accident. You can listen to the PSAs by downloading them from the I-CAR web site. I-CAR committees, volunteers, and Gold Class businesses can also use the PSAs in their local marketing programs.

In the past, Gold Class public service announcements have been a very successful consumer marketing tool. PSAs mailed in 2000 were aired over 30,000 times by nearly 200 radio stations in the U.S. The announcements were played in such major markets as New York, Chicago, Detroit, Indianapolis, Honolulu, and Memphis, for an estimated total of 128 million audience impressions.

    A Sneak Preview...

The process of designing a new Enhanced Delivery program is a complex project requiring months of work. The staff of the I-CAR Technical Centre begins developing the technical material, holds a pilot version of the class and solicits feedback from instructors and class participants before finalizing the program materials. Here's a closer look at some projects that are currently in the development process:

    Electrical And Electronics Program 2:

This second program in the Electrical and Electronics Course will provide information on the diagnosing, testing, and repair of common electrical loads, including high and low current circuits. The program uses an I-CAR designed simulator to provide participants with hands-on experience in troubleshooting problems including the testing of motors, relays, solenoids, and other circuit devices. This program is in the final stages of development. Check the web site for program availability information.

    Tools And Equipment Program 2:

This program will provide an internet-based catalog addressing descriptions, applications, maintenance, and safety issues for tools and equipment commonly used during the collision repair process. Questions pertaining to the tools and equipment list will be asked on the on-line post-test. More information will be provided on the web when the program becomes available.

    Structural Parts Steel Programs 1-5:

The Structural Parts Steel programs will educate students on the procedures and processes used to repair, replace, and section vehicle structural parts. Front and rear rails, apron assemblies, floor pans, rocker panels, and A-, B-, C-, and D-pillars are included. Frame repair for pick-up trucks and sport utility vehicles are also discussed. Students will also have the opportunity to practice and demonstrate their skills by completing the series with the Structural Parts Steel Qualification Test. These programs are now being prepared for pilot classes.

    Measuring Program 1:

This program will provide information on the principles of using three-dimensional measuring systems. Participants will learn how to use centering and tram gauges, fixtures, and universal and mechanical, laser, and electronic measuring systems. This program is in the final stages of development. Check the web site for program availability information.

    Straightening Steel Program 1:

This program will cover the repair of damaged steel body panels. The use of dent removal tools, repair methods, and body fillers will also be discussed. Technical material for this course is currently being reviewed. This program will be available to the public next spring.

    Refinishing Programs 1-6:

These programs will provide information on automotive refinishing equipment and materials, vehicle preparation, material application, color theory, finish defects, and vehicle detailing. Programs 5 and 6 of this series provide an opportunity to practice and demonstrate skills in the areas of surface preparation, color matching, and finish application. Pilot classes for these programs will be held this summer, and the programs will be completed by early next year.
